"That White Stuff!"
Fall is in full bloom with all the wonderful color changes in the trees. What do we have on the ground?
Our favorite white stuff of course! The cotton is being picked in the fields, and the back roads are showing some of the loose pieces fell off the trucks. It doesn't seem that long ago when the buds where just starting to show the white puffs. Now they're getting ready for their long haul from the fields to the clothes we enjoy so much.
Several years ago when I was driving along Harvey Point Road with my son James, we stopped to salvage some of the pieces that were floating loose. I didn't feel anyone would mind us cleaning up a bit of the road, and I'd never held cotton when it was in it's purest form before. I must say it's an experience I won't soon forget.
We admire the fields as we drive by, but some of us ex-city folks are still amazed at how simple life here in the country really is. I hear people in the north are already being dusted with their first blast of snow. It makes me that much more grateful we live here in the south, where snow is not a regular visitor. I've lived in the north before, and I don't miss the boots, snow tires, snow shovels, gloves, or heavy winter gear.
